's debate. the debate was make or break for mitt romney who appeared confident, commanding and in control. at times, it seemed a subdued president obama was less prepared allowing romney to steer the direction of the debate. many, including "meet the press" host, david gregory calling romney the clear winner. >> his proposal calls for a tax cut on top of $2 trillion of spending. >> everything he said about my tax plan is inaccurate. if the tax plan he described were a tax plan i was asked to support, i would say absolutely not. >> reporter: there's no time for rest. the senior advisers on the "today" show, early this morning. >> governor romney put more preparation into it than they did into the invasion of normandy. i expected a strong performance and got it. >> many were watching governor romney without 30 second attack ads. >> reporter: perhaps most evidence during the closing statement. >> four years ago, i said i'm not a perfect man and wouldn't be a perfect president. that's probably a promise governor romney thinks i kept. i fight every day for the american people. >> no question i

and applause ] did you guys see this during last night's debate? mitt romney said that he loves big bird. which was even more awkward since the question was "can you explain your tax plan?" [ laughter ] aftemonths of build-up, last night was the first presidential debate at the university of denver. of course, a lot of big names didn't show up for the event. joe biden, nancy pelosi, president obama. no, he just didn't -- [ light laughter ] [ boos ] it was not a good night. not a good night for the president. in fact, the president seemed to give long-winded, disjointed answers during last night's debate. even gary busey was like, "dude, you got to focus. [ laughter ] focus. first, one can understand stuff." -minute preparations are underway for tomorrow's first presidential debate in denver. it could be the best chance for mitt romney to change the race in battleground states like colorado, florida, and ohio. nbc's steve handelsman joins us live with more on what to speck during the rumble in the rockies. steve? >> reporter: i like that, pat, thanks. good evening. this is the campus of the university of denver. south and west of downtown on the way to the mountains. this is the site of tomorrow night's possibly critical first presidential debate. it will be watched nationwide. some voters in ohio camped out to be the first to cast early ballots in this battleground state. most states start voting before november 6th. putting more focus on the first debate in denver. doug hudson, andrew and chris run bicycle company in colorado. they took me out to red rocks today. these guys will watch the debate. andrew, hoping for a breakthrough by his candidate, mitt romney. >> i want him to talk about conservative values, especially economically. empowering small businesses. >> reporter: chris used to vote repub
